Sabrina, October 1995

Sabrina lifted her head from her pillow to look across the room. Cassidy snorted and made a weird gurgling sound. Finally. Cassidy had entered her deep sleep (snoring) phase. Sabrina threw off her covers and swung her feet out of bed. She checked her wristwatch, first taking a moment to admire the heavy leather strap and the gold-edged face. Almost midnight.

Sabrina pulled her slippers from under her bed. She glanced back at Cassidy, now flat on her back, eyes closed and mouth slack, then moved quickly across the room to ease open the door. Once sure no one was lurking the halls—Mrs. Clayton definitely liked to lurk and the schedule didn’t switch for two more days—she stepped outside. A cold wind hurtled down the corridor, creating a whispering howl, and she shivered, but in a good way. The air was crisp, almost icy, but she felt at her best a little cold. More connected to the universe, somehow. More alert. More powerful.

At the end of the hall she cast one more glance behind her, then ducked into the barely used janitor’s supply closet tucked away in an alcove. She raised her hand to protect her mouth from the choking smell of chemical cleaners, then carried on to the very back and moved aside the painting that hid the small lever. Click. She pushed at the wooden panel pretending to be a wall and it swung open to reveal the door. From her pajama pocket she retrieved the old-fashioned metal key and inserted it into the lock. She turned it hard to the right, then stepped inside.

She’d arrived early, she always did. She had no choice; she had the only key. Naomi was already bitching at her to leave it somewhere so others could use it, but Sabrina knew how that would go. No. This legacy had been passed down to her and she would treat it with the respect it deserved. This special room, the Cloisters (as she’d named it), would remain a secret to them and only them.

First, she went to the closet where six dark ruby-red cloaks now hung and took hers from its hanger. She pulled it on, savoring the feel of the beautiful velvet material against her skin. She left the hood down for the moment, resting on her shoulders, then went over to the large trunk sitting under the small solitary window. Dark wood, leather and brass, the trunk had been here when Sabrina first entered this room a month ago. Another legacy from Aunt Jessica. Inside the trunk, Jessica had left several treats for Sabrina: a bottle of vodka, a beautiful silver cigarette holder (now only half full) as well as an etched metal lighter, a couple of blankets, eight small cushions to sit on, a deck of cards, a few candles, and a polaroid camera. To this stash, Sabrina had added a couple of flashlights, six wine goblets and six bottles of wine—a hundred bucks to Billy had paid for an illicit visit to town but he’d do that for free soon enough.
